So.based on our first visit I would travel from anywhere in the NYC area to dine and/or drink at Samba. But the bigger issue was that the service just wasn't as good the second time around and so the evening didn't feel quite so 'special'. The second visit we added some vegetarians to the mix and so ordered the Palm Strogonoff which was very tasty and the veggie feijoada which was not. The service and atmosphere were exemplary and we felt that we were part of a fabulous party that we sadly had to leave all too early. All were delicious and accompanied by loads of Caipirinhas and juices for the younger set (the Cashew Juice in particular should not be missed). Our first visit was perfect with a feast of pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese puffs), palm salad, steak, feijoada, potato and yucca fries, collard greens, and an assortment of desserts. I recently dined here twice as host of groups of family and friends headed to the theatre. Overall, I can recommend Samba Kitchen & Bar whole heartedly. I had Feijoada, slow cooked black bean stew, dried meat, bacon, pork shoulder, sausage, collard greens, yucca flour, rice, orange it was a festival for the taste buds. Salmão Grelhado, broiled salmon, lemon, olive oil, carrot, broccoli, peas, potato, rice, beans, was perfectly prepared and very tasty. Camarão no Coco, shrimp, coconut milk, green pepper, tomato, onion, scallion, celery, fresh coconut, rice was served in a hollowed out coconut, and had the kind of intricate blend of flavors that made it very popular. Bife Samba, a grilled strip steak, onion, garlic, potato fries, yucca flour, rice, beans, turned out to be much more than the menu described. The main courses were equally as inviting. We also shared Pão de Queijo, Brazilian cheese bread that I would say are sort of like hush puppies with class and an enticing cheese flavor. The Camarão Grelhado, grilled jumbo shrimp with a lemon butter dipping sauce and home made potato slices, was very tasty and fresh. We started out by sharing a couple of appetizers. Their beer selection is pretty diverse and includes an actual Brazilian beer. At Samba, they've got way too much class to use umbrellas, and they use real fruit giving the drink a truly fresh and invigorating flavor. They resemble a classic tropical resort drink that is served with those stupid little umbrellas. Most of our party of six started with a variety of Caipirinha, a traditional Brazilian drink. If that's your preference too, then this is a five star venue. As for the fifth star, we would have preferred a quieter room, but I understand that the current climate in the industry is a louder vibe that conveys more energy and excitement. We expected a reasonably competent theatre district eatery and what we found was a really inventive and authentic Brazilian restaurant. Well Samba Kitchen & Bear was something of a surprise.
